Warning: valve protection older North and Best kites

Postby Toby » Tue Nov 23, 2021 4:12 pm

Since it just happened to me, I would like to warn users from older North and Best kites.

My kite exploded when I dropped my kite hard on the water. Normally no problem, but when your valve protection isn't ok anymore, it can happen.

My repair kite told me, it is common with older North and Best kites. Don't know the age of North kites, but for sure 2015, like mine.
Best, he said, from 2013-2016.

The protection keeps breaking...specially when made out of plastic, and rather in more salty areas and stronger UV (but valves get less UV due to their position, so rather the salty air eats it)

Here a Best valve protection that already shows breaking:

And here from my North kite (2015):

Close to rip the LE:

LE exploded:

Please be aware of this issue and check your kites for wear on the valve protection.

I will have all my protections now replaced by better ones (not plastic, more flexible)and my kite repaired.

Good luck!

Thanks for the heads up. I have some North kites ranging from 2015 to 2018, Rebel, Dice, Vegas.
Let us know what do you use to replace the protections.

I have repaired those. Unfortunately it is not that easy repair work because you have to go inside the struts and in 5 strut kite there is 10 pieces of those plastic rings. So quite a lot work there if all of them has to be replaced.

I don't know what could be the material if not plastic. I used thin polycarbonate sheet to cut rings from, other possibility is PE plastic.

Sewing through plastic rings is a bit too much for ordinary sewing machine so you need sturdier machine there. Needle size can be about 140 and thread thickness 20 is ok

If my old Best kites have that problem, it's time for recycling them into something else. I just flew my 2009 14m Best Nemesis a couple of days ago and it held air for over 2 hours. I'll have to check the valve rings (not sure if it has them). Thanks for the heads up.

I think 2009 is not affected.

I pay 40 Reais (8 USD) per valve connection! I have 6 struts...so 2 per strut...but since I can't buy those kites anymore, it is well worth it !

He uses something looks like fake leather...more flexible, and should last he said...when my kite returns, I will make a picture.

This has happened to some of the valves on my 2015 Best kites. I repaired a couple of them using the material from a soft glasses case & glued it into position using aqua seal. I don't know how long it will hold up - it would obviously be better to sew them. However ... unlike Toby, I am not in the habit of crashing my kite hard into the water! Must be an Airstyle thing!

Plastics can be formulated for longevity, flex, strength, toughness, and a few other properties.

These plastics were not formulated for longevity. If these plastic rings are on any of your kites, or used kites you are looking to purchase, don't buy or use them.

i've had this issue on my norths, happened on 2 that have hardly even been used too.
i got a bit MacGyver on mine, cut an old inflatable up and stuck some pvc patches on the inside with aqua seal, worked a treat. it wasn't worth buying the new parts at £10 each for a kite that's worth £200 then having them sewing in by a repair shop, i repaired 42 valves this way, just cost me 2 tubes of glue and my time. the 2010 were stronger 2011 up are this type of plastic, is annoying when the part includes the deflator pin and lock.

My 2012 Rebels JUST-REFUSE-TO-DIE. I will use these tricks on them because they are still fun (a little bagged out it works really well as onshore wave kite). Canopy recoated in Shoe goo and that's all.
My 2017 Rebel was LITERALLY falling apart after 18 months. I have 8 or 9 significant repairs on it (home made). Same rider, same beach, same wind.

I've had this happen on a few BEST kites. I've fixed it with a tyre patch (and glue) with a hole punched in the middle, stuck on from the outside. Not very elegant because you can't really avoid the excess glue from being visible, but surprisingly, it seems to work, maybe two years now.
