Learning kiteloops with Ufo 9m

Postby Allarounder » Thu Nov 25, 2021 8:03 pm

Hi there

I want to learn kiteloops on a twin tip ( I'm doing hellis , downloops ) .
I don't think i have the right kite yet for it , but I'm thinking to start learn it on the Ufo 9m , since it has a really tight and fast loop .
Never took it on a twin tip , normally using Xr6 9m with the twin tip.
Do you think it's a good idea ?

From a theoretical perspective it’s seems like it’s a bad idea.
AFAIK the ufo is made for good drift, low wind performance.

You want to jump high and use it in high wind.
Pretty much the exact opposite properties it’s designed for.
Seems a bit tricky especially for a move that can end up with broken bones.

Disclaimer: I neither own a ufo or do powered kiteloops

The same properties apply to Doutune Neo , and it's considered a very soft kite to learn kiteloops on.

I guess there's no harm in trying it, if you own it already.
But then it depends what it is that you want to achieve and where you're at. If it's about looping the kite in a 2-3m jump transition, or backloops, then sure it will turn fast and don't yank much, and that'll be confidence building. If you want to practice KOTA style megaloops where you fly horizontally and the kite catches you at the end of the loop so that you don't freefall from 10m high, then it's most likely not the right stepping stone. But there probably isn't any "training" kite for that kind of move anyway, just lots of practice, with gradual increments in your commitment.
And if you hypothetically start to master the technique on your gentle training kite, you'll be equally spanked the day you'd try it with your meatier kite because it will feel dramatically different.

The kite will have a hard time holding it's shape under the load of the kite loop. It is a single strut kite so not much structure. It will work but not going to be the ideal kite. I would recommend a kite like the Reach, Pivot, etc. etc. for learning. Something that will boost and is pretty damn fast. This way if you do not get enough height it will be fast enough to catch you.

The XR6 you could loop but you have to jump to the moon for it to catch you so not ideal at all to try it. I made the mistake of trying to loop it when I owned mine.
