Sri Lanka holidays

Postby fatkiter » Mon Nov 29, 2021 7:16 pm

I searched the forum but couldn't really find an answer to what I am looking for so here it goes:

I am thinking to go to Sri Lanka for a family holiday end of DEC beginning of JAN.

From what I checked the kite schools/ rental places are all located in Kalpitiya (I don't want to carry gear with me)

I will be traveling with 3 children ages 8 to 10

Anyone knows of a good hotel on the beach within reasonable travel distance from the kitespot?

Preferably resort type so the kids and wife can be entertained while i escape to go kitesurfing

I get it that the wind is not super strong during winter in Sri lanka but is there a pattern? Like thermal around midday etc or is it a hit and miss situation?

Thnaks!

Have a look at https://www.elements-resort.com/the-resort

It's next to Kappalady Lagoon, which I prefer to Kalpitiya Lagoon personally for flatwater kitesurfing. Plus you can go to the ocean in the afternoon if you like that ;)

Wind: Jan is better than Dec, as there is more sunny days. If it's sunny, there will be a thermical breeze in the afternoon, between 14-18 knts. Probability in Jan is about 85-90%
Trade winds during winter are offshore, stronger early morning, and vary in strengths

I went to Sri Lanka 3 years ago and it was a wonderfull experience. It was in december. People are so kind and welcoming. I spent 1 week in Kalpitiya in a kite camp (and another week visiting the country). It was very nice but not ideal for young children. I don't remember seeing any "resort" type hotel. These are almost all located in the South coast.
The wind was light but still got 3 days with decent wind.

Not really the best time in Sri Lanka. Yes still some wind but not great. June, July, august, September is wayyyyy better

He is going in Dec/Jan - maybe in a parallel universe the summer monsoon conditions are relevant
This said, the winter season has its advantages too - surely not for waveriding on the west coast, but the thermical wind is def more consistent for freestyle Jan/Feb in the area around kalpityia.
