Kitesurfing spots in South Florida East Coast

Postby Soli » Thu Dec 02, 2021 5:49 pm

Hey guys, I just replied this same post in a 2013 someone posted, but not sure if it will be read. Just in case, here it is again:

I'll be in the East Coast of South Florida till mid December with no kitesurfing gear. I'm interested in a kite spot that would rent out the full gear (kite, board, harness).

Preferribly flat water, no waves.

I know the Keys are a good option, but not sure I'll have the time to get there. Anywhere from Key Biscayne to West Palm Beach would be fine (approximately).

I also know some spots apply tons of restrictions. I've never Kited in Florida and know no spots whatsoever, so not sure those places are the best option for me.
A spot where experimented locals go (would be awesome to meet other kiters), who know.the area well would be great, in case I need to ask some questions :)

I've been kiting for 9 months and am not an advanced kiter (yet)...

Thanks in advance for any info! 🤙🤙

My advice being a resident and a long time activist to support, maintain, and reopen access is to contact the friendly staff at Adventure Sports in Miami or Ft. Lauderdale for some information. Contact Otherside Boardsports for FL Keys info.

If you don't want to go too far south, you can contact 321 Kiteboarding in Cocoa Beach. They have flat water in the intracoastal (520 Slick).

Thanks. I'm staying in the Boca Raton area. Cocoa Beach is a bit far unfortunately. I was looking for a closer spot.

Trying to plan a trip to south central Forida in February. Will be driving down from North Carolina and looking for a foil friendly spot to hang out for a week with our wives.
Any good suggestions?

You're coming from NC? OBX is a great spot! :) Why not just stay there? If I lived there, I wouldn't go anywhere else!

If you are going to Key Biscayne, goto Crandon Park and rent from Miami Kiteboarding. You will need to be IKO Certified.

The Keys are totally worth the drive if you cannot do Crandon and Islamorada/Curry Hammocks provide the only kiter social scene outside of Tampa. The Miami spots do not have a social element.

No one rents kite gear that I know of in the Boca Raton area. Schools provide gear for their students routinely however. A number of the launches off Southeast Florida require the ability to kite upwind assuming you could find rental gear. You would do well to hook up with the folks at Adventure Sports and in particular Matheson Hammock in Miami. It is a drive but it will be worth it given the easier riding conditions, i.e. shallow water, almost no waves and no bathers. You should progress well in those conditions with good wind. As you're here for a while you should do a road trip down into the Keys and hook up with Otherside Boardsports. Conditions down there can be ideal as well particularly from their support boat on the sand bars.

Regarding IKO certification or other requirements to kite in heavily regulated locations, what would a guy like me (kiting 22 years and thousands of sessions) need to do to be able to kite there? I live hundreds of miles from a kite business. Would I need to take a course?

Thanks all for the feedback. Maybe I need to clarify.

Planning a road trip with a buddy and our wives in February.
We are both experienced kiters (20 years) and will be bringing our gear, no need for rentals.
Don't want to go as far south as Miami but would not rule it out 100%.
Primarily interested in foiling, foil friendly spots.
Ideally somewhere our wives would be happy while we're kiting.
What about Cocoa Beach, Ft. Pierce, Jupiter, etc.

Looking for good locations, ideally uncrowded and not heavily regulated.

Thanks
Tony
