The handle-board stiffener thingy actually works!

Postby sarc » Fri Dec 03, 2021 8:58 am

A friend made a stainless steel handle for my favorite board. We got talking about the Kiteforum post where they introduce the adjustable board-handle stiffener (can't find it now). My favorite board has gone a little too soft after years of riding and we tried the handle stiffener for s**ts and giggles. I did not want adjustability but I wanted to reduce flex.
What do you know, it works. The board rides much better - not perfect (little springiness, and this handle is a little overbuild and heavy) but definitely better: I think I got an extra 2-3 years of fun from the handle!

Here's pic - 2013 Shinn Speedball v2 18w - hands down the best wave twintip ever built. I bought it on sale in 2016 I think. Still looks like new - great testament to Shinn build quality!

I don't know if the board will crack due to stress applied where it's not designed to. After a few hours riding seems like no problem. Anyhow I have a Monk Chromatic in the mail! I'll report back if the board breaks.

Good to know!

But, that handle looks dangerous...if you crash in your board....which does happen.

Wrap something around this sharp edges. Like old bike tire (the inside).

Or try to make a handle a bit flatter.

I believe you that board handle works because I have seen it happening from the opposite side of view: I have broken 3 plastic handles during strong kiteloop sessions with some really hard landing. The only reasonable explanation is that the boards has enough flex and structural strength to absorb the impact of the landing but the handle does not have that flex and strength so it just breaks. As I want a board with more flex I do not use handles of any kind any more.

True what Toby said the edges of that stainless handle can be dangerous.

Agreed. I'm just surprised that it works at all!

You can bet on that. Give it a few hard landings and this handle will most likely go through the board or you'll rip the inserts out.

Gotta love these rectangular mounting flanges...

Hate to break it to you - but this is a really dumb idea.

@Toby - spoiler alert! Another "Shinn doesn't want to honor the warranty" cry-baby topic is coming!

So we should expect warranty claims for boards with that new handle from Core and Eleveight?

So how does this concept apply to something like the Core Imperator VII (stiff Carbon Fiber)? Are you guys saying it makes it likely to break the actual board?

Dunno but I have had brutal crashes from 50ft up with kiteloops and handles have never broken. On a crash, what stresses the handle in a way that it would break the board?

I dunno Toby but seems to me demand is building back up…for another T-handle release!
