gull drysuit protective tape that will stay on

Postby papasmerf » Sun Dec 05, 2021 7:49 pm

i just used my gull drysuit for the first time this year and noticed some concerning chafing-holes, probably from my harness/impact vest zipper. i think i have stopped the chafing but was wondering if anyone knows of something that i can tape on to protect those spots from further wear. this is on the front, around belly button area. i thought of dacron tape but i don't think it will stay on. was thinking of dacron tape but using aqauseal to put it on

very pleased with this gull drysuit,, this was user error

A patch of Tear-Aid possibly? Haven't tested it but it seems to be a fairly robust material

I don’t have dry suit experience but from the tapes and stuff I have in the cupboard I would thin some aquaseal with cotol 400, (toluene based I think) and paint it on. Have a look at the Mcnett website they have a variety of Pu based glues of different visocity!

Not much to lose trying spinnaker or Dacron tape but I doubt that it would stay put even with rounded corners as you can’t sow down the edge.

If you want to make a strong patch paint acquasure over a lycra patch it wil make a kind of flexible waterproof conposite

^^ I think the above is a good suggestion and I have done that on wetsuits. If you do decide to use material try to make the repair as smooth as possible, Frayed threads can end up as little rubbery teeth that may wear your harness.

This is a picture of the inside of the dry suit, not the outside that would contact the harness. It is a gore like membrane fabric.

hi,, no that is actually the outside of my wetsuit. i am still not 100% sure i know what caused it but i think my zip up impact vest, which is for wakeboarding, is a bit too long tends to get underneath my harness if i forget to fold the lower part of the impact vest up, but i think the twisting of my torso is rubbing the drysuit against my harness/impactvest, which is held more still because of the kite,,

anyway, going to use some aquaseal and a little brush to feather it out so it has a bit of flexibility.

gregk of comex kite had pm'd me, and he suggested that. greg knows his stuff. i was going to cut a small piece of dacron and glue it on with aquaseal but i think i will just stick with aquaseal.

do you think the lycra somehow adds some flexibility to the dried aquasure?
