This bar....? Looks a flimsy thing, not surprised it needs parts changing often.
They just recommend what the afnor standard recommends. So they are just being honest because they know people that are buying for them are not beginners that are influenced by marketing.
And of course their chicken loop like any other brand can break because of production problems. Let's not forget that the chicken loop of the op that broke was from one of the most expensive brands.
I snapped my Naish CL after years of usage. Same hole -
Sand - wear - failure procedure as described. Replace when you start to see holes is what I do as well.
Shock loading, bend radius, abrasion. All known cordage/rope in use failure mechanisms?
Kiters, currently combining all three on a single point?
What could go wrong?
Would an increased and smoothed out bend radius on a harness hook lessen the effect of shock loading and abrasion?
Something like a tubular hook (just the connection)?
It could look fkin snazzy if done right and improved functionality?
I'm guessing the inner rope snapped due to abrasion with the kinked PU tube where it bends around the harness hook. If you don't unhook then I can recommend the duotone wave CL. It has a metal protector which holds the shape and I think may prevent this kind of thing.
not sure what happens if metal on metal...doesn't sound good to me...anyone with experience?
I guess it's better for a rope harness...
Jeff mentions the metal “surf” CL combined with the metal Mystic Freeride spreader in this vid. This would also be applicable to Ion’s version.

Im gonna have to look over that CL to see if there were any holes. I had not noticed any but I also was not looking for them.
In terms of usage, these are not light usage quite the opposite - 500-700 hours per year mostly in nuking strong conditions or with a large kite that pulls hard. I simply have not had a CL break before so I was thinking what time interval I need to replace. Its the only one that has broken of the multiple Click bars I run - altho it has the heaviest l/most extreme usage.
If the tube internally is cracked where it gets crimped over the hook that is also an abrasive edge 90° to the rope. The crimp or two is not ideal for the cord either.

Yup it had something and I also found a hole in one of my other bars CL. Ordering some new CLs to replace and also to have a few on hand so I can replace em each year on my personal bars. I do not think its necessary on my teaching bars unless I see visible punctures.
Note the pics are of different CLs - the one that broke and my other main bar (I swap between two bars with custom lines).
Swapped both of them out with a spare CL and one from a teaching bar that was mint.
I've broken my chicken loop after 3 seasons. Therefore I think its safe to replace every three seasons.
The plastic around the CL was fine. What happens is that the CL wraps around the harness hook and it point loads and wears away at the crease. I think some harness hook shapes cause more damage, eg sharp corner hooks or skinny hooks. Also connecting your CL to a ring on your slider rope would be bad if you did lots of jumps.
Look at your CL, it actually gets really thin where it wraps around the harness hook over time.
I could actually hear the CL rope slowly breaking before it happened but I didnt know what it was. Its like a grinding noise every time I jumped. So listen out.
I wrapped my harness hook with tape to make it a smoother shape but that just came apart after a day.
