But I must state another observation, cannot keep it without comment:

I see less garbage in the water, coming here since 2004.
Brazil is more and more aware of keeping nature clean.

Cumbuco never has been cleaner, daily the beach gets cleaned with a machine and people.

The new mayor is doing a lot for Cumbuco and the area.

All streets are being made, stone streets, not asphalt (which is bad for nature).
Every street that leads to the ocean has a system at the beach and to keep garbage from getting into the ocean.

Not sure where you kited to see brown water, maybe clean your glasses?

The water is not crystal clear like some other places, this is mainly due to the current of 2-3 knots. It takes Sand with it and therefore is not like Egypt.

I have to agree…
It was only the first day I arrived…
Maybe a combination of low tide and water dumped by rain and river in Barra do Ceara.
Yesterday it was back to usual.

Cumbuco is in the way to receive a blue band, as first and only in the state of Ceara:

Lately, the water at one of the local spots I kite at has had a foul smell and a brown/amber color which is not normal (see pic below). Previously this summer the water quality was excellent (clear) and corals had returned. I have been in contact with Florida Department of Health which samples water quality in the state's waters and hope to get some response as to the cause. It could be from storm runoff but it has not been consistent as it was bad the third week of Sept. and then cleared up until today. I am waiting to see what the Department of Health has to say. In the past, a nearby municipality has dumped "partially treated" sewage (3 million gallons) into the nearby river after heavy rains due to street flooding. Shortly thereafter, the beach was flagged so people would not enter the water. I hope that is not the case this time.

Note: The dark area is sea grasses. The water between the shoreline and the sea grasses is normally very clear.

As said: any kiting condition in water you can drink a cup is to me more rewarding than perfect conditions in a dirty enviornment…
