I’ve played around with this too. It’s really just another way of getting the wing away from you. Sometimes it’s nice to get the additional visibility. The difference between this and kiting is that the wing is partially depowered in this position. Stalling by the leash (walking the dog) also does the same thing but stalling on a harness line is more stable if you balance it right.

The Drexler’s are always playing around and progressing. Doesn’t mean this is going to stick. Playing around is just part of progression/ innovation. 90% of it is just trying new things.

I didn’t see a winger on a surfboard yet…TT yes.
Wouldn’t that make sense to ride waves?

I’ve seen it, but it’s just a novelty. A few issues I see (1) the height of the foil gives more room for the wing. Without that height the wing is going to be more challenging to manage. (2) you can’t get the upwind angles without the efficiency of the foil (3) you can’t cut through the waves on the way back out without the foil. (4) a surfboard would need to be in a more critical area of the wave vs the efficient foil (on the shoulder) which is also harder with a wing.

could definitely be explored more and maybe there is something there but the wing generally works because of the efficiency of the foil.

Shortest board?

Not sure this is correct (meaning I know it isn't), will see if I can find a picture

It will be hard to find much smaller than this.
At 80cm it might not be the shortest but probably the narrowest at 18.
It blows my mind how smooth he switches feet on that tiny plate.
