Is this a gimmick that someone just did for fun or is this an actual thing? Has anyone done it on a surfboard and to catch waves and use the wing to "tow" them back out? I wouldn't have thought this would be practical due to sizes of wings and needing the extra foil height to avoid touching the water.

Well, the wing height is not a problem (unless with gigantic wings), as you can easily pump up onto foil from wingfoilboard on the water.

The reason it isnt used, is because you go upwind like sh.. with a wing, when not having a foil.

So unless something gamechanging in terms of wing design and efficiency pops out, it is a dead end IMO.

I've had a couple of wingmares at a beach we visit which is very tidal. At low tide it is very wide and ankle deep for a long way.

The first wingmare was trying to get going on a surfboard with a wing. All the water start attempts failed. A jump start sort of worked until the fins ripped out on the bottom. I probably should have tried some form of stinkbug start in deeper water.

The second wingmare was trying to get deep enough to start a foil with a fairly strong shore break. Two wings badly damaged in those attempts. Should have had some kite gear as a backup.

What would have worked and been a bit of fun is to use a largish TT or skimboard and rip around in the shallow water. That's the plan for the next trip down the coast.

The balancing act for all this is how much gear you take on a trip away. Too much gear is depressing. Not having the right gear is tragic. Working out how to mix and match gear for best effect leads to nirvana.

But would a TT and wing be more fun than a TT and kite in the shallows?

A kite with a TT or skimboard is much more fun in the shallows :D Just because someone can do something with a wing doesn't make it a good idea.

What's next, attaching a pole to a board with a wing on top and reinventing windsurfing?? (Too late, it's been done with a Wind Weapon)

That was my point with the "leading" question, as I can not see the point at all.
But maybe the OP has a different opinion, so had to ask :D

Irony is wingers seeing something different and saying, "That looks crap. That will never work."

Next time the wind is over 20 knots I am going to try it with my surfboard in shallow (3') water and see how hard it is on my arms and if I can stay upwind. Might have a shot this weekend. If so, I'll see if I can get someone to take a picture and post it here.

I did that and ripped the fins out of my board. I'd go a skim board or a fat TT.

I am imagining with both you could do a little jump, maybe a throw and run along then jump on, get skimming then start edging and see what happens. Wear a wetsuit. Sand burns could hurt. Have somebody video it. I definitely want to see what happens.
