Kitesurfing and Birds – important facts

GKA News:

Kitesurfing and Birds – important facts

During the last three years I received from kitesport community all over the world complains about environmental-fundamentalists who try to prohibit kitesurfing because of so called environmental reasons. I discovered that most of the reasons given by the supporters of such kitesurfing-prohibitions are somehow connected to birds. Very often it is argued that kitesport on water is a serious threat for birds. I collected the most popular statements of the environmental lobbyists and discussed them with scientists and experts from different European countries. The result of this research is the attached document (flyer) which shell help to debilitate the false assertion of the environmental lobbyists.

1. Perception of birds

Claim: Birds perceive kites as predators and are driven away by them.

Facts: Birds perceive the world differently than human beings. They also see light in the ultraviolet portion of the spectrum. This for example enables them to discern patterns in the plumage of all different kinds of birds. It helps them to distinguish between friend and foe. Neither kites of kite surfers nor black stickers in the form of a birds’ silhouette, which can be found on many windows, have such patterns. Therefore, birds do not perceive kites or bird stickers as predators or enemies.

2. Avian behaviour during onshore winds

Claim: Kite surfers disturb birds when searching for food and during ingestion.

Facts: When onshore winds reach certain strengths, birds normally move to a windless area.
By doing this, rapid cooling of the Avian on the one hand is prevented and on the other hand food can be found more easily. Flying insects are too light and too small to fly in strong onshore winds while snails and clams in murky water, churned up by waves, make it difficult for the birds to find. The behaviour of kite surfers is the complete opposite of birds as they practise their sports almost exclusively in offshore winds on the coasts of the North and East See.

3. How much coastline is available for kitesurfers?

Claim: Kite surfers ride on every inch of all waters. There are no protected retreats left for birds.

Facts: More than 70% of the German coastline is unsuitable for kite surfing. In most cases these areas are not accessible, they are surrounded by agricultural land or run along cliffs and woods. Less than 5% of the whole German North and East Sea coast offers good preconditions for kite surfers who are in search of good infrastructural facilities.

4. Can birds be disturbed inland?

Claim: Kites fly over the territory and disturb the breeding area.

Facts: Most of the birds’ breeding areas are inland or a few 100 meters from the coast. In order to disturb the breeding birds the lines to which kites are connected need to be between 100 and 1.000 meters long.
However, this length is not used for kite surfing. Flying over the breeding area is nearly impossible as the lines are only between 15 meters and 25 meters long.

5. Why does bird life change?

Claim: Kite surfers are a major reason for the change of birdlife and migration of indigenous species.

Facts: The most important reason for the change of birdlife is the climate change. Linked to this are the migration of northern bird species and influx of southern bird species. Therefore, kite surfing is not the reason for migration of indigenous bird species but the change in climate. This is a phenomenon, which also affects areas where kite surfing is impossible.

6. How fast and noisy are kites?

Claim: Birds cannot adjust to kites as these fly too fast. Moreover, they scare birds off when they strike the water.

Facts: Every person walking on the beach knows from his own observation that most kite surfers leisurely make their way through the air. While doing so, the gliders can be seen gliding peacefully and quietly up in the sky. The average speed of kite sport is below 40km/h. Primarily beginners in training areas cause the loud bang of plummeting kites. These, however, are in touristic areas next to bathing zones and not in conservation areas.

Yes to nature conservation and No to a general ban of kite surfing

Kiteboarding in Pt Reyes national seashore is closed from March 1st through September 30th

SEASONAL CLOSURES:
Seabird Colony Sites:
 Miller Rocks, Stormy Stack, Hog Island and Duck Island are closed to the public from
March 1 to July 30 of each year.
This closure is necessary to ensure that no damage occurs to nesting burrows of storm
petrels and rhinoceros aucklets, both of which are species of concern under California state
law. These sites are also well-used by common murres, pigeon guillemots, pelagic
cormorants, and double-crested cormorants, which are easily disturbed during nesting
season. Nothing other than a full closure during nesting season would be sufficient to protect
the birds.
Seal Pupping Areas:
 Double Point and Drakes Estero harbor seal pupping areas (as signed) are closed to all
entry from March 1 to June 30 of each year.
 Limantour Spit harbor seal pupping area (as signed) is closed to all entry from March 1 to
June 30 of each year.
 The southern end of South Point Reyes Beach (as signed) to the Lighthouse; the beach
from the Chimney Rock Lifeboat Station to Chimney Rock; the road leading from the gate
at the end of the Chimney Rock Road to the Fish Dock area including immediately
adjacent beaches. From December 15 -to March 31 these areas are closed to all entry to
protect elephant seals during pupping season.
These closures are necessary to protect harbor and elephant seals from disturbance during
the pupping season or when they are exceptionally vulnerable and for other wildlife concerns.
Snowy Plover Closures:
 The Point Reyes (Great) beach between the North Beach Parking lot and Abbotts
Lagoon is closed to all entry by visitors each Saturday and Sunday and Federal Holiday
from the Saturday immediately preceeding Memorial Day through Labor Day.
The seasonal closure is necessary to ensure that no damage occurs to ground nests of
snowy plovers, a federally listed threatened species. Because there are bird nests there
throughout the breeding season, nothing other than a full closure of the specific fenced areas
would be sufficient to protect the birds.

Kite-boarding:
 Kite-boarding is not allowed off Limantour Spit (north of the main Limantour Beach
access trail) and the portion of Point Reyes Beach from North Beach parking lot to Kehoe
Beach from March 1 to September 30 due to snowy plover habitat.
Kite-flying:
 Kite-flying is prohibited on Point Reyes Beach between Kehoe Beach trail and North
Beach parking lot (as signed) due to snowy plover nesting activity between March 1 to
September 30.
These seasonal closures are necessary as kite-boarding and kite-flying can disturb nesting
shorebirds, cause nests to fail, and interfere with wildlife behavior.
Limantour & Drakes Estero:
 The waters including tidal areas of Limantour and Drakes Estero are closed to boating
from March 1 to June 30.
The Esteros are protected seabird, shorebird, and marine mammal pupping sites. No
management action other than closure is sufficient because a single disturbance could
significantly reduce the productivity of the colonies, resulting in a reduced population size or
loss of habitat if they leave the area.

Kitesurfing is also harmful to cockroaches and their breeding habits.
.
It is also an easy target for politicians to think they are making a difference.
.
Such bolleycock.

Very good info, it is so ridiculous how enviornmentalists find a way to point the blame on kitesurfing for endangered species, when there's worse things out there killing the wildlife.

"It's not my fault your damn birds are missing!"

it's a battle of willpower...

you have on one side passionate retired people with a huge amount of free time on their hands vs kiters that are working and kiting with far less time to devote to it.

Studies here showed that non kiter humans, dog walkers had a far larger effect than kiters on bird movement. Having kited around birds for 15 + years - if you brought in an eagle and replaced it with my kite would the birds still chill out underneath? errr i doubt it! that is the old chestnut - the birds think the kite is a predatory eagle - its an absolute crock of shit with no basis whatsoever!

ps its not very global to be quoting the german coastline! lol

Here's another reason why , we, environmentalists fail.
Some say such absurd things that makes many people neglect us.
BTW, the birds "told" me that they never spoke to the guys that claim that birds are afraid of kites.

Fact: whenever a bird is on the path of my kite, he nonchalantly gives the kite the right of way without panicking.
A kid clapping the hands on the beach scares the birds a lot more.

Three seagulls flew into my kite lines this summer holiday. Never happened before...
